Turkey interested in buying 40 U.S. F-16 fighter jets

Hsmilitarycom: After failing with U.S. F-35 fighter jets, Turkey is interested in buying 40 Lockheed Martin-made F-16 fighter jets and 80 modernization kits for existing fighter jets. 

Biden's administration says the sale of F-16 fighter jets to Turkey is considered very important, because Turkey is a NATO ally.

Turkey interested in buying 40 U.S. F-16 fighter jets

Previously, Turkey had failed to buy F-35 fighter jets, the U.S. decision not to sell F-35 fighter jets to Turkey due to Russian S-400 air defense systems.

Turkey's interest in buying U.S. F-35 fighter jets was debated so long after Turkey bought russian S-400s, so the U.S. decided to expel Turkey from the F-35 fighter jet program.

Turkey called the move unfair and demanded reimbursement for the $1.4 billion payment. Lockheed Martin Corp. makes the F-35 and F-16.

On March 10, Erdogan spoke with Joe Biden by phone, Erdogan told the US President that, it was time to lift all "unfair" sanctions against Turkey's defense industry and that Turkey expected its request to buy the F-16s to be resolved as soon as possible.

Turkey hopes plans to buy 40 U.S. F-16 fighter jets go ahead as it wishes without having to be deterred by U.S. sanctions on Turkey.

To date, the Biden administration has not given a decision on Turkey's interest in buying U.S. F-16 fighter jets. Observers say it is unlikely the U.S. will lift sanctions on Turkey and approve the sale of F-16 fighter jets to Turkey.
