Air target reconnaissance, Pantsir-S2 Russia is able to destroy targets from a distance of 40 km, Bayraktar TB2 will be difficult

The Russian Ministry of Defense on August 2, 2022 released a video regarding the action of the latest version of the Pantsir-S2 mobile air defense system to fight the Bayraktar TB2 drone.

It is known, Pantsir-S2 is the latest generation, an upgraded variant of Pantsir-S1. Equipped with a new S-band SOTS search radar to increase the detection range from 36 km to more than 40 km with 360-degree coverage.

The system can now track more than 40 incoming targets and attack 8 to 10 targets traveling at a speed of 1200 meters per second.

Azimuth search has also been increased from 80 degrees to 90 degrees thanks to the electronic beam steering.

The Pantsir-S2 is still armed with the same missile and anti-aircraft launcher system as in the Pantsir-S1 including its transport 8X8 truck.

As for Pantsir-S1 and Pantsir-S2 are armed with two 2A38M anti-aircraft guns of 30 mm caliber and twelve 57E6-E ready-to-fire missiles.

The Pantsir-S1 and pansir-S2 families are made to hunt down and drop air targets at a distance of up to 30 km, including drones, helicopters or low-flying fighter jets.

As is known, in the conflict in Ukraine, this Turkish-made Bayraktar TB2 drone became the mainstay of the Ukrainian troops to carry out positional reconnaissance and attack the targets of russian troops.

The Bayraktar TB2 drone can be armed with four light guided missiles that can destroy ground targets such as tanks or other combat vehicles at a maximum distance of 14 km.

The weakness of the Bayraktar TB2 drone is that it does not have a countermeasure system against short-range canon fire or anti-aircraft missiles.

The new radar of pantsir-S2 itself has been designed to detect various unmanned threats such as small and medium-sized drones.

During the conflict in Ukraine, pantsir-S2 was used also to target Mi-24 attack helicopters and Su-25 attack jets belonging to the Ukrainian AU that performed its combat missions by flying tightly to the contours of the earth to avoid radar capture.
