Russia strengthened its air defense forces. Have air defenses been weak so far?

Russia plans to overhaul its air defense forces after gaining new experience in the war in Ukraine. Moscow will also strengthen its air defenses to counter Finland's accession to the NATO military alliance.
Since Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24 last year in what it calls a "special military operation," fighting has morphed into artillery warfare with extensive use of drones and missiles. These conditions tested the air defenses of Russia and Ukraine.

In a published interview, Lieutenant General Andrei Demin, Deputy Supreme Commander of the Aerospace Forces, said air defense forces face a number of challenges in the face of the Ukrainian offensive.

Demin said Russia would also bolster its defenses once Finland, which shares a 1,300km (800-mile) border with Russia, joined NATO.

"Under these conditions, the air defense forces are working on the issue of protecting the country's borders in the northwest of the country in accordance with the increased threat level," Demin said.
