Germany announces delivery of IRIS-T air defense system to Ukraine

"Germany will supply Ukraine with the IRIS-T air defense system," Chancellor Olaf Scholz said after calls from Kyiv and German opposition parties to increase supplies of heavy weapons. Scholz said Germany has "continued to deliver since the inception of the NMD," designating more than 15 million rounds of ammunition, 100,000 grenades and more than 5,000 anti-tank mines were sent to Ukraine since Russia launched a special operation. "Recently, the government decided that we would provide the most advanced air defense system that Germany has in the form of IRIS-T," Scholz told lawmakers in the Bundestag. A security source told Reuters last month that Germany was considering supplying Ukraine with the IRIS-T SLM anti-aircraft missile system.
