“Russia's violation of Swedish airspace is, of course, unacceptable. This will lead to a firm diplomatic response from Sweden. Sweden's sovereignty and territory must always be respected," Defense Minister Peter Hultqvist said.

The Swedish military reports that the situation is under control and the incident shows that they are always on high alert.

"Given the current situation, we take this very seriously," SC said.

Prior to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Sweden said it no longer ruled out joining NATO. This immediately caused a negative reaction in Russia.

Russian Foreign Minister Maria Zakharova said that Sweden's possible entry into NATO would require retaliatory measures from Russia.

Regarding Ukraine's desire to join NATO, Russia also demanded that NATO provide written assurances, that it would not join the alliance in the future, but both the alliance and the Ukrainian authorities categorically refused.
