Hsmilitarycom: Turkish drones flying from the Evros (Meriç) River to the Greek island of Meis, or Kastellorizo, have become a “headache” for Greece, retired Greek General Evangelos Yeorgusis has said, according to Hurriyet Daily News.

In an article titled ‘Bayraktar testing Greek defences’ published in the Greek Ta Nea daily, former air force commander Yeorgusis wrote that Turkish-built Bayraktar TB2 drones can carry out three to four flights at various altitudes per day.

These flights, which observe the movements of Greek warships and defences on disputed Greek islands, are exhausting the Hellenic Air Force since it has to scramble F-16 fighters jets constantly.

“It is already not easy for Greece to deal with this and it will become even more difficult if Turkey increases the number of drones and the number of flights,” Yeorgusis wrote.

He added that these drone overflights are also Ankara’s way of reminding Greece of its claims over the Aegean Sea.

France recently started receiving advanced 4.5-generation Dassault Rafale multirole jet fighters from France, which are more advanced than any fighter jet in the Turkish arsenal.

Six of these jets, out of 24 Athens ordered from Paris, have arrived in Greece and begun flying over the Aegean.

However, some Greeks don’t think these jets will resolve the issue of drone overflights.

“What difference would it make if we buy 200 Rafale jets?” asked Kyriakos Velopoulos, leader of the Greek Solution nationalist party, in an interview. “Turks will surround us with 400 drones.”
